Privacy

Fieldnote is built so your research stays yours. There are no accounts, no Fieldnote servers holding your work, and no tracking. Your research lives in your browser, and it only goes somewhere else when you turn something on.

Stored on your device

Your research lives in your browser, not on our servers.

No accounts or tracking

No sign-up, analytics, ads or tracking cookies.

You choose what’s shared

Data only goes to the AI, Drive or tools you connect.

Who we are

Fieldnote (usefieldnote.app) is an independent product designed and built by Damilola Adewale. For anything about privacy, email damilola.adewale03@gmail.com.

What we don’t collect

  • No sign-up, account or profile. Fieldnote never asks for your name or email to use it.
  • No analytics, advertising or tracking scripts, and no tracking cookies.
  • We don’t run a server that receives, stores or reads your discoveries, transcripts, notes or files.

Where your research lives

Everything you create — discoveries, interview transcripts, evidence, notes, your knowledge base and settings — is stored in your browser’s own storage (IndexedDB) on your device. It stays there until you delete it. Clearing your browser’s site data for usefieldnote.app removes it, so export a backup from the app if you want to keep a copy.

The sample discovery is fictional. It doesn’t contain anyone’s real data.

When data leaves your browser

Only when you choose one of these, and only to the service you chose:

AI you connect

  • Demo mode runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere.
  • On-device AI runs on your computer. The first time, the model files are downloaded from their public host (Hugging Face) and cached in your browser; your research is not sent to it. If you use Chrome’s built-in AI, it runs on your device under Google’s terms for that feature.
  • Cloud AI (your own key). If you add an Anthropic (Claude) or OpenAI key, the text needed for each request — such as a transcript you analyse or your research brief — is sent directly from your browser to that provider, under their terms and privacy policy. Requests don’t pass through Fieldnote. Your key is stored only in your browser. Desk research uses Claude’s web search through your key.

Google Drive (optional)

  • Sync keeps a copy of your discoveries in a hidden app folder in your own Google Drive, using the drive.appdata permission. Fieldnote can only see the files it created in that folder, not the rest of your Drive.
  • Import lets you pick files from Drive, using the drive.file permission. Fieldnote can only open the files you pick.
  • Data moves directly between your browser and Google. The sign-in token stays in your browser.

Tools you connect (MCP)

If you connect a company tool, Fieldnote sends the queries you run to that tool and brings the results into your browser. If you choose to route a tool through Claude, the query and results also pass through Anthropic using your key.

How we use Google user data

Fieldnote’s use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Specifically, data from your Google Drive is only used to provide the sync and import features you turned on. It isn’t transferred to anyone else, used for advertising, read by people, or used to train AI models.

Hosting

The app’s files are served by Vercel. Like any web host, Vercel may record basic technical details of each request (such as IP address, browser type and time) to keep the service running and secure. We don’t use these to identify or track you. Fonts and icons are served with the app, so loading Fieldnote doesn’t contact other font or icon services.

Your choices

  • Delete any discovery in the app, or clear site data in your browser to remove everything.
  • Turn off Drive sync in the app, and revoke Fieldnote’s access any time at myaccount.google.com/permissions. Files in Fieldnote’s app folder can be removed from Drive’s settings under “Manage apps”.
  • Remove an AI key from the AI settings, and manage data held by AI providers through their own controls.
  • Because we don’t hold your data, we can’t view, export or delete it for you — you’re in control of it on your device.

Security

Fieldnote is served over HTTPS. Your data is as safe as the device and browser it’s stored on, so use a device you trust, keep your browser up to date, and be careful when adding API keys on shared computers.

Children

Fieldnote is a professional research tool and isn’t intended for children under 16.

Changes

If this policy changes, we’ll update it here and change the date at the top.
